ROYAL THAI ARMED FORCES ON BUYING SPREE - Seek New Tanks,

Over the next few years, the Thai defense and procurement budget is expected to further increase. Thai defense expenditure will be driven by factors such as security threats and modernization plans. Additionally, the country is increasing its internal security spending in order to counter threats posed by pirates, terrorists and unrest in the southern part of the country. Defense equipment suppliers and subcontractors can expect demand for aerial, land, and naval defense systems, and the internal security market will see a surge in demand for surveillance and biometric identification systems, plus riot and crowd control equipment.

According to recent reports, the Royal Thai Army is seeking approval from the Military Equipment Standard Committee for draft requirements on its new APC. According to Nation TV – The Royal Thai Army has allocated a budget of THB 8.9 billion (USD 290m) to procure tanks to replace ageing models which have been in operation for 50 years. The army is also looking to procure new helicopters to replace UH-1H models and also acquire new automatic mortar launchers.

The Royal Thai Navy has a requirement for two OPVs (excluding the second OPV currently being built). In the long term, according to Thai Armed Force.com, it is believed the Royal Thai Navy will require new corvette/frigates to replace HTMS Pinkao, HTMS Tapi, HTMS Kirirat, and HTMS Makutrachakuman. Also The Thai Ministry of Defence and Royal Thai Navy are expected to make a decision to purchase 2-3 submarines before the end of the fiscal year in September.

The Royal Thai Air Force has plans to purchase a Surface-to-Air Missile Weapons System for air-base defense; but has no plan to procure new fighter jets in the next budget year. Instead it will focus on upgrades and maintenance. Preliminary plans call for upgrades to the air force's fleet of F-5 jets at the Nakhon Sawan-based Wing 4 division.
