ROYAL THAI AIR FORCE SEEKS NEW HELICOPTERS AND TRANSPORT AIRCRAFT

 

Thailand is a keen buyer of helicopters and the RTAF is currently seeking 16 new helicopters to replace its aging fleet of UH-1H Hueys. The Air Force is also looking to acquire 12 new transport aircraft to replace C-130Hs - the service life of which will expire in 5 years. The RTAF will also develop UAVs to improve border and territorial surveillance.

Thailand’s National Assembly has approved defense spending for 2017, the budget for which comes into effect in October and runs until September 2017, amounting to 210.7 billion Thai baht (US$6.1 billion). The figure is a modest increase of 220 million Thai baht over the 2016 defense budget. Thailand has one of Southeast Asia’s highest levels of defence spending and with the increased spending of recent years it has allowed the already capable Royal Armed Forces - especially the Royal Thai Air Force - to modernize by adding new weapons systems and aircraft to its inventory.
