The packaging industry is facing many challenges at the moment with global plastic pollution and recycling issues and transformational changes to value and supply chain models, resulting in negative government and consumer perceptions.

These challenges are requiring packaging companies, manufacturers and retailers to re-think their approaches and undertake strategic changes to address the challenges of meeting global and domestic Packaging Targets, Plastics Pacts, Extended Producer Responsibility Directives and more. This session will discuss the targets and what the industry is working towards to ensure that packaging is circular by design and sustainable, reusable, recyclable and has the lowers environmental impact possible.

Session #2: How to balance Sustainable Packaging & Food Waste Targets

How do you balance Sustainable Targets with Food Waste Targets when designing packaging?
Everyone in the world has a role to play in meeting two important targets 1. Global and Local Packaging Targets and 2. Food Waste Targets. Neither is mutually exclusive and when we talk about pivoting your business to become more sustainable inside and out it is critical that you understand both goals and what they really mean to you. This session will help you look at your own environmental footprint and what road you need to take to become more sustainable as a business.

The panel will discuss the challenges and learnings when looking at how to implement Save Food Packaging Guidelines into your business and how to find the optimum design for your products. Best Practice Award-winning examples will be showcased

Session #3: Circular and Sustainable Design: Packaging for the Future

Design sits prominently at the heart of the circular economy. It requires us to redesign everything: products, business models, cities, and the linear systems that have lasted for the past centuries. Design is key to the first principle of circular economy, ‘design out waste and pollution’.

The reality is that most things today are still designed for the linear model. This means that almost everything needs to be redesigned in accordance with the principles of the circular economy. The speakers in this session will discuss the Circular Economy and what Circular design really looks like.

Session #4: Reusable & Refillable Packaging Designs for the Future

In 2019 Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s New Plastics Economy initiative introduced its research on reuse models. Converting 20% of global plastic packaging into reuse models offers a USD 10 billion business opportunity. The research highlights six ways that reuse can bring significant benefits to both users and businesses:

     1. Cut costs

     2. Adapt to individual needs

     3. Optimise operations

     4. Build brand loyalty

     5. Improve user experience

     6. Gather intelligence.

This session will discuss current and future refillable options from across the world.
