![]() "Zinc Ion Battery" Innovation in Battery Technology Today, battery is playing an increasingly important role. It is being used as an energy storage for a variety of electronic devices. It is also at the heart of the development of robotics and electric vehicles of the future. The biggest disadvantage of lithium ion batteries is safety issue because this type of battery can ignite and explode as often seen in the news. lithium-ion battery contains toxic heavy metals that pollute the soil and ground water.
Technology Center for National Security and Commercial Applications (NSD), National Science and Technology Development Agency (NSTDA) in collaboration with Chulalongkorn University and the Defence Science & Technology Department have successfully developed "Zinc Ion Battery", a new alternative, safe, and environmentally friendly battery. There is a plan to build a Zinc Ion battery factory at the Eastern Economic Corridor of Innovation (EECi), located in Wang Chan Valley, Rayong Province in the near future.
Dr. Sivarak Siwamoksatham, Director at NSD Center, NSTDA. “Thailand does not have a source of lithium. All must be imported from abroad. If there is a large demand to energy storage from renewable energy sources including the production of electric vehicles, this may lead to shortages and there will be conflicts resources in the future."
Dr. Adisorn Tuantranon, Researcher at NSD Center, NSTDA. “The main highlight featured of Zinc-ion batteries are price, safety, and environment friendly. It is more importantly; it is not toxic to the environment and can be recycle. It also provides good performance for applications such as stationary energy storage systems, home battery for backup power, military radio station, electric cars & trucks."
